OUR CURRICULUM

  • LITERACY / LANGUAGE ARTS: 

    • Teacher College Reading and Writing Project Units of Study in Reading Workshop (1st - 6th Grades) provides a comprehensive and responsive approach within cross-grade curriculum in which skills are introduced and deepened through explicit instruction in reading skills and strategies in genres such as Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry.

    • Tools of the Mind (Kindergarten) is a research-based early childhood model that helps young learners develop cognitive, social-emotional, self-regulatory, and foundational academic skills.  Scholars work in small groups to build foundational skills for reading and writing, along with independence and self-regulation.  

    • Teacher College Reading and Writing Project Units of Study in Writing Workshop (K - 6th Grades) provides a comprehensive and responsive approach to English/Language Arts.  Scholars become fluent writers through the writing process:  rehearsing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing their own pieces of work through different writing styles - Narrative, Informational, and Opinion/Argument. 

    • Lavinia Group Close Reading for Meaning (2nd - 6th Grades) through the use of genre - Fiction, Informational, and Poetry, as an inroad and putting the emphasis squarely on developing evidence-based ideas, the Close Reading for Meaning approach gives scholars the tools to distill both the literal and deeper meaning of any text and to use this initial understanding as the anchor for further analysis.

    • Fundations Phonics (K - 3rd Grades) is a multisensory, structured language program that provides explicit instruction on skills and strategies emphasizing:

      • Phonemic Awareness

      • Phonics/Word Study

      • High Frequency Word Study

      • Reading Fluency

      • Vocabulary

      • Comprehension Strategies

      • Handwriting

      • Spelling

    • Word Voyage Phonics (4th - 6th Grades) provides a heavy emphasis on integration of Word Roots, Vocabulary, and Grammar.

    • Lifelong Readers (K - 5th Grades) provides Guided Reading instruction that focuses on direct phonics instruction, grade-level vocabulary programs, and comprehension.  Lifelong Readers also allows scholars to develop and deepen their phonics and fluency skills through the usage of decodable texts that provide opportunities for instruction on sight words, phonics rules, fluency, and concepts about print.

    MATH

    • iReady Classroom Mathematics (K - 6th Grades) is a student-centered core curriculum that allows scholars to learn and apply Common Core aligned mathematical concepts to real-world mathematical problems and examples.  Scholars problem solve through trying, discussing, and connecting the following concepts:

      • Numbers & Operations in Base Ten

      • Operations & Algebraic Thinking

      • Measurement & Data

      • Geometry

      • Counting & Cardinality

    SCIENCE:

    • Tools of the Mind (Kindergarten) scholars explore form and function in science activities––investigating differences in teeth, feet, animal tracks, camouflage and adaptation in multiple habitats. They learn about the arctic tundra, savannahs, rainforests, the layers of the ocean, and the moon, and develop all the math skills in the Common Core in games designed to build academic, executive functions and self-regulation skills at the same time.

    • FOSS Science (1st - 6th Grades) provides opportunities for hands-on investigations where scholars will explore topics in:

      • Sound and Light

      • Air and Weather

      • Plants and Animals

      • Solids and Liquids

      • Motion and Matter

      • Structures of Life

      • Life and Physical Sciences

    SOCIAL STUDIES:

    • Tools of the Mind (Kindergarten) scholars explore and develop background knowledge in various Social Studies topics ––communities around the world, languages, culture & customs, history, and geography. These topics are designed to build academic, executive functions and self-regulation skills at the same time.

    • Studies Weekly (1st - 6th Grades)  scholars explore and develop a deepened understanding of core Social Studies topics organized thematically to the strands of civics and government, geography, economics, and history.   Scholars learn about diverse communities and how to be responsible, civic minded citizens.

  • SCHOOL-WIDE INITIATIVES:

    • Responsive Classroom (all grades) An approach to the elementary classroom that emphasizes character development, with the goal of deliberately helping scholars build academic and social-emotional competencies within the structure of a strong and safe school community.

    • Co-curriculars (all grades) Scholars participate in co-curricular classes daily: art, music, health & physical education.
